Don’t take a chance on your night of romance!

9 Feb 2018

This Valentines Somerset County Council’s road safety team want to have a heart-to-heart about the night before and the morning after.

Whether you’re being taken out for a romantic meal or having one lovingly prepared for you at home the chances are you’ll be accompanying it with a glass or two to of your favourite tipple, and while the road safety team want you to enjoy your evening we also want to ensure that everyone stays safe and doesn’t end the night, or the morning after, with a drink drive conviction or worse.

Plan ahead if you’re going out and pre-book a taxi, or designate a driver to ensure you know how you’re going to get home safely. It’s worth remembering that it only take ones alcoholic drink to affect your ability to drive safely so if you’ve drawn the short straw and ‘volunteered’ to drive it’s worth erring on the side of caution and sticking to the soft drinks.

This year Valentine’s Day falls on a Wednesday which means that many of us will be on the road commuting to work early the following morning. Unfortunately alcohol can linger in the blood stream for far longer than you may realise and this means it’s entirely possible to be over the legal limit to drive the morning after having a few drinks on the previous evening.

The only remedy proven to remove alcohol from the blood stream is ‘time’ so it’s important to remember not to drive/ride first thing in the morning, again planning ahead can help keep you safe so either moderate your drinking the night before or make alternative arrangements to ensure you don’t have to drive/ride the following morning.
