What is Bikeability?

10 Jul 2017

In 2016 Somerset Road Safety provided free Bikeability training to 2000 year 6 children.

Bikeability courses are based on the government approved national standards for cycle training; they provide the necessary skills to ride confidently and above all safely on today’s busy road network

There are 3 levels of Bikeability course

Level 1

  • Delivered in a traffic-free, where trainees will learn basic bike handling skills and improve their riding confidence. After completing a level 1 course a trainee will be able to:
  • Correctly fit a safety helmet
  • Check a bike is ready to ride
  • Get on/off a bike safely
  • Ride a bike and make it go where they want it to
  • Use good bike control to avoid objects
  • Effectively use gears
  • Control a bike with one hand
  • Observe all around when cycling
  • Stop safely and quickly

Level 2

  • Delivered on quiet residential streets. After completing a level 2 course a trainee will be able to:
  • Start and finish an on-road journey
  • Pass parked cars or slower moving vehicles
  • Make a u-turn
  • Identify and react to potential hazards
  • Communicate intentions to other road users and pedestrians
  • Effectively use road positioning
  • Use junctions, including turning left and right in and out of minor roads

Level 3

  • Delivered on roads with higher volumes of traffic travelling at higher speeds. After completing a level 3 course a trainee will be able to:
  • Cycle almost anywhere using complex road junctions and features such as roundabouts, multi-lane roads and traffic lights
  • Plan a route using any road
  • Understand driver blind spots
  • Filter through queuing or slower moving traffic
  • Identify and react to hazardous road surfaces

If you believe that your child will benefit from completing a Bikeability course then ask your school to contact Somerset Road Safety.
