It’s difficult to find a downside to walking; it’s an excellent form of exercise, it allows you to take in the scenery at your own pace, you don’t need a licence to do it, and of course it’s free! However, despite all those benefits, walking can, in certain circumstances, increase your vulnerability, particularly in the case of collisions with other road users. That risk increases for children of school age due to several factors; their bodies are smaller and lack the resilience of larger frames, their perception of distance and speed is not fully developed and often their understanding of the consequences of a collision is weak, leading to a lack of concern or the typical feeling of indestructibility that comes with youth.
